Volunteers on Hornby Island participate in the BC Coastal Water Bird Survey, which is part of the effort in the conservation and monitoring of coastal water bird species. During the winter months vast number of loons, grebes, cormorants, herons, geese, ducks, shorebirds and gulls can be found feeding and roosting around the intertidal shores of Hornby Island. Monthly counts are registered with BC Coastal Water Bird Survey, which are used to assess the annual changes and the long term trends of water bird populations.
Bird count information for Hornby can be found here. This is on the Bird Studies Canada website.
