FORESTFEST

Following the AGM (10:00-11:00 at the Hall), please join us at CHI’s first ForestFest event to celebrate Hornby’s natural ecosystems and get involved with CHI’s upcoming restoration initiatives. Spend the day with local experts Loys Maingon and Grant Scott as they lead a series of hands-on workshops on Garry oak restoration and forest ecology.

From 11:00-12:00 at the Hall, learn how to successfully grow, maintain, and transplant native Garry oaks from seed with conservation biologist Loys Maingon. After lunch (served at the Hall), take a walk through the forests of Helliwell Park and Savoie Road with Registered Professional Forester Grant Scott and learn everything from soil composition to the different types of trees and their ecological roles, all while enjoying the stunning natural beauty of Hornby forests.

Get ready for this event now by collecting local Garry oak acorns from Hornby trees so you can plant them during the workshop (for those of you who are unable to collect acorns before the event, we will have some on hand to supply). Some planting supplies like pots and soil will be provided, but we encourage you to bring your own 1-gallon pots if possible.

This is a rain or shine event, so make sure to dress accordingly for the weather!
